Our Story

On May 29, 2008, Frank and Kathy Van Steenhuyse purchased Russell Funeral Home from Jim and Pat Russell, renaming it Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home. Formerly known as the Ed and Carol Pickart residence, our funeral home was built in 1984. It had been their home until the summer of 2006 when it was purchased by Jim and Pat Russell for the purpose of making it a comfortable place for families to arrange funeral services for their loved ones.

The history of this location is noteworthy: Tilford Academy, Virginia Gay Hospital and the Lutheran Home all called this site “home” at one time. The meaning of this location is more important yet: all three facilities were dedicated to helping people through education, compassion, healing and service.

Here on this very site, people have celebrated every emotion, from the pride of accomplishment, to the joy of birth and new life, to sharing the golden years with loved ones and the sorrow of fond farewells.

The dedication to helping others in the community shown by those before us continues, as we make that our goal as well. We are proud to have had many years of service to Vinton and the surrounding communities in the past. We now join with you, our neighbors and friends, to celebrate a new beginning at this location.
