Obituary for Beatrice Evelyn "Bea" Dunkelberger

Beatrice Evelyn “Bea” Dunkelberger, 88, of Vinton, formerly of rural La Porte City, passed away Saturday, February 14, 2009, at Windsor Manor in Vinton due to complications of age. 
    A Celebration of Life service will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 18, 2009, at First Christian Church in Vinton with Pastor Connie Wacht officiating.  Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, February 17, at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home in Vinton and one hour prior to services at the church Wednesday.  Interment will be in Westview Cemetery, La Porte City. 
    Bea was born June 20, 1920, in Brandon, Iowa, the daughter of Robert and Evelyn Mae Dean Elliott.  She lived in Waterloo through junior high and attended high school in Jesup. She graduated from Jesup High School in 1938.  She worked as a secretary for a sign service in Waterloo for two years, then moved to La Porte City. 
    On June 19, 1946, Bea was united in marriage with George Henry "Chub" Dunkelberger in Freeport, Illinois.  They farmed in the La Porte City area. 
    Bea was a long-time member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in La Porte City, participating in Church Circle.  She also played in a neighborhood card club and enjoyed sewing, quilting, baking, gardening and antiquing.  Her greatest joy was her family. 
    Bea is survived by her husband, Chub Dunkelberger of Vinton; one son, Alvin G. Dunkelberger and his wife Wendy of La Porte City; one daughter, Sharon Grams and her husband Jim of Hudson; six grandchildren: Jeff (Tammi) Grams of Hudson; Tracy (Dave) Eastman of Platte City, MO; Angie (Jeff) Hutton of Mt. Auburn; Dena Dunkelberger of La Porte City; Dawn (Heath) Markland of Mt. Auburn; and Gail (Steve) Zea of Vinton; 10 great-grandchildren: Lauren, Michael and Madisen Grams of Hudson; Sydney, Joshua and Jacob Eastman of Platte City, MO; Kayla and Dani Hutton of Mt. Auburn; Josef Slocum of Buffalo, NY; and Lyndsay Dunkelberger of Mt. Auburn; and 4 step-great-grandchildren.     
    She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, John R. "Jack" Shatzer; one daughter-in-law, Nancy Shatzer; her step-father, John Kerstetter; and one granddaughter-in-law, Julie Grams. 
    In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the La Porte City Fire Department.  Bea and Chub were so grateful for their assistance when needed.
