Obituary for Chester L. Hobbs

Chester L. “Chet” Hobbs, 83, died surrounded by his family at his residence in Vinton on Thursday, February 26, 2015.

    Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 2, 2015, at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home in Vinton with Rev. Connie Wacht officiating. Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 1, at the funeral home. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton. Military rites will be conducted by George G. Luckey American Legion Post 57 of Vinton and Iowa Military Funeral Honors of Des Moines.

    Chet was born July 9, 1931, in Lawrence, Kansas, the son of Chester A. and Elsie V. Smith Hobbs. He graduated from high school in Kansas.

    Chet proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a member of George G. Luckey American Legion Post 57 in Vinton.

    On December 16, 1955, Chet was united in marriage with Pauline Lovell at the Prairie Creek Christian Church Parsonage.

    Chet attended First Christian Church in Vinton. He liked to “junk,” go fishing and share picnics with his kids. He also helped Pauline decorate the lawn of the home they shared.

    Chet worked as a welder at Perfex and Hawk Bilt in Vinton. He was often seen around town selling fruits and vegetables.

    Chet is survived by his wife of 59 years, Pauline Hobbs, of Vinton; two sons: Greg “Dutch” (Karen) Hobbs and David Hobbs, both of Vinton; one daughter, Jane (Mike) Ades of Batavia; one brother, Warren (Karen) Hobbs of Cedar Rapids; sister-in-law Marie Hobbs of Cedar Rapids; 6 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Gene and Ray Hobbs.

    Memorials may be directed to First Christian Church in Vinton.

Funeral: 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 2, at the funeral home
Interment: Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton, with military rites by Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post 57 and Iowa Military Funeral Honors
