Obituary for Deloris M. Michael

Deloris M. Michael, 96, of Vinton, died Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at Virginia Gay Nursing and Rehab following a courageous battle with cancer.        Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 28, 2009, at Wesley United Methodist Church with Pastor Kären Larson officiating.  Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 27, at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home in Vinton.  Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton.       Deloris was born March 30, 1912, in Clarence, Iowa, the daughter of Samuel and Ivanilla Dean.  She graduated from Clarence High School in 1929 and was the class valedictorian.  She attended Cornell College in Mount Vernon for two years where she studied music.   On February 16, 1934, Deloris was united in marriage with Jack Dowd in Estherville, Iowa.  They formed a six-piece band that performed in northwestern Iowa.      In 1936, they purchased the Maytag franchise in Vinton, which became Dowd Appliance.  The couple later divorced, and Deloris became a pioneer for women, owning and operating a retail business.    On February 10, 1946, Deloris married L.A. Michael.  The business then became Michael’s.  In 1965, son Ron became a partner and the store was renamed Michael and Dowd.  The store was her life.  She remained as the bookkeeper until she was 89 years old.       Deloris is survived by two sons: Ron (Kay) Dowd and Larry Michael; one daughter: Joan Harrison; grandchildren: Lisa (Mark) Vogt, David (Jane) Dowd, Deborah Parker, Mike (Rose) Harrison, Chris (Glenn) Schanbacher, Rita (Jim) Fix, Mary (Scott) Hepker, Mark (Deb) Harrison, Brian Michael, Christine Michael and Rebecca Michael; 22 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren.       She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands Jack Dowd and L.A. Michael; and one sister, Doris Ivadelle in infancy.       Memorials may be directed to Wesley United Methodist Church, 516 2nd Avenue, Vinton, IA 52349.
