Obituary for Donald Joseph Martin

Donald Joseph Martin, 66, of Vinton, died Tuesday, February 5, 2008, at his home following a long illness from cancer.        Visitation will be held Friday, February 8, 2008, from 4 to 7 PM at Russell Funeral Home in Vinton with a funeral service immediately following at 7 PM.  Military rites by George G. Luckey American Legion Post 57 will be held at the funeral home following the funeral service.  Inurnment will take place at Calvary Cemetery in Sioux City, Iowa, at a later date.       Don was born February 16, 1941, in St. Paul, Minnesota, the son of Earl A. and Marie H. Rivard Martin.  He moved to Sioux City with his parents at the age of 4.  He survived polio in 1954.  He graduated from Bishop Heelan High School in Sioux City in 1959.      Don served his country in the United States Navy from 1962 until 1966 as an air traffic controller. He received a BA degree from Loras College in Dubuque in 1967.  He attended Northern Illinois University at DeKalb for one year for graduate public administration studies.  He earned a MS degree in Professional Accounting in 1975 from the University of Hartford in West Hartford, Connecticut.       Don married Madonna (Donna) Coté on November 10, 1994, in Vinton.       With public service as his career objective, he served in city administrative positions in nine states, including six years as Town Manager of Narragansett, RI, and 16 years as City Coordinator of Vinton, Iowa, from which he retired June 30, 2006.       He was a member of numerous nonprofit boards and service clubs over the years, the longest being the Lions Club.  He was a member of George G. Luckey American Legion Post 57 and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Vinton.       Don is survived by his wife, Donna, of Vinton; one son, Steven (Amanda) Martin of Lathrup Village, MI; three daughters, Kathleen Martin (Joe Palma) of Apache Junction, AZ, Juliana (Jordan) Coleman of Queen Creek, AZ, and Michelle (Michael) Murray of Georgia; one step-daughter, Wendy  Rembe of Lawson, MO; four step-sons, Steven Polly of Moundsville, WV, Shane (DeLisa) Polly of Lawson, MO, Cameron (Felecia) Polly and Wilbur (Tracey) Peters, all of Hubbard, NE; four sisters: Darlene (Fred) Rose of Elm Grove, WI, Jeanine (Jim) Woods of Siloam Springs, AR, Janelle (Charles) Limoges of Ainsworth, IA, and Lavonne (Steve) Peterson of Mukilteo, WA; 2 grandchildren and 17 step-grandchildren.        He was preceded in death by his parents.       A memorial fund has been established.
