Edna G. Lane Gilliland Shain, 99, passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 25, 2018, at the Vinton Lutheran Home.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 1, 2018, at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home, Vinton, with Rev. David Gates officiating. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 30, at the funeral home. Interment will be in Brandon Cemetery.
Edna was born September 10, 1918, in Brandon, Iowa, the daughter of Edward Levi and Helen Ruth Miller Lane. She graduated from Brandon Consolidated School in 1936 and immediately began working with her father in the insurance business. Edna could be considered a pioneer as one of the first female insurance agents. Edna worked as an insurance agent in Brandon and Independence and owned Lane Insurance Agency in Independence, retiring on January 10, 1977, after 40 years of service.
She moved to Independence from Brandon in 1942 and resided there for 53 years. She’d been a resident of Vinton since 1995.
On August 16, 1966, Edna was united in marriage with Gordon Henry Gilliland in Centerville, Iowa. He preceded her in death on November 9, 1982. Edna married Paul Marshall Shain on August 25, 1990, in Kerrville, Texas. He preceded her in death on January 15, 1998.
Not only was Edna an exceptional businesswoman, but she was an avid goose hunter and enjoyed trout fishing. Adventures while wintering in Texas and Arizona led to many fond memories for Edna to share. Edna was a member of First Christian Church in Vinton and participated in the choir. She also sang in the community choir. She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star, Declaration Chapter #278, the MZ Chapter of PEO and the Mentor Club. She spent time sewing and looked forward to visits with family and friends.
Edna will be greatly missed by her many family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her two loving husbands, Gordon and Paul; and her aunt.
Memorials may be directed to the Vinton Lutheran Home as a thank you for the loving care given to Edna.
