Obituary for Ella Mae Holst

Ella Mae Holst, 89, of Vinton, died Tuesday, February 5, 2008, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo following a brief illness.  Ella had been a resident at the Virginia Gay Annex for the past 6 ½ years.       Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, February 8, 2008, at Wesley United Methodist Church in Vinton with Pastor Karen Larson officiating.  Visitation will be Thursday, February 7, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Russell Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.  Interment will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Vinton.       Ella was born June 10, 1918, in rural Van Horne, the daughter of Arl and Sadie Grimm McNeal.      She married Donald C. Holst of Vinton, on August 27, 1940.  The couple farmed southeast of Vinton in Taylor Township in Benton County until moving to Vinton in 1983.  Donald preceded Ella in death on April 3, 1982.       Ella was a member of numerous civic and religious organizations, including long-time membership of Wesley United Methodist Church in Vinton.  Other groups included her church circle, the Taylor Friendly Club and the Neighborly Neighbor Club.       Ella is survived by her daughter, Shirley (Charles) Spicher of Waterloo; her son, Dr. Donald C. (Merilee) Holst, Jr. of Delavan, WI; three grandchildren:  Steven C. (Connie) Spicher of Marshfield, MO, Shelly L. (Warren) Riley of Papillion, NE,  and Holly A. (Brian) Boerhave of Norway, IA;  seven great grandchildren:  Erin and Emily Spicher of Marshfield, MO,  Dionne and Abbey Riley of Papillion, NE,  and Sarah, Rebekah and Benjamin Boerhave of Norway, IA; and several nieces and nephews.       She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers:  Charles (Ethel) and Harvey McNeal; five sisters: Mary (John) Bergstrand, Edna (Lester) Noe, twin Alice (Floyd) Peterson, Mabel (Robert) Lindberg and Pearl (Olin) Noe.       A memorial has been established.
