Obituary for Erna G. Wood

Erna G. Wood, age 97, of Vinton, died Friday, April 13, 2007, at the Vinton Lutheran Home from complications of a broken hip.  She was born September 17, 1909, in Posen, Germany, to Edward H. and Emelie (Sieg) Wutzke. In 1911, Erna immigrated with her family to the United States. They settled in the Vinton area to establish their new home.  On March 17, 1934, she married Gerald C. Wood in Cedar Rapids. They farmed in the Walker area for a number of years before moving to Vinton. Erna was a homemaker. She loved gardening and raising flowers both inside and outside. Erna was a wonderful cook and enjoyed collecting recipes.  Erna became a member of Stewart Memorial United Methodist Church after moving back to Vinton. She took great pride in taking care of the parsonage and church for several years.  After Gerald’s death, Erna worked at the Vinton Ham Plant until her retirement.  She is survived by her son, Richard, and his wife Carol, and her daughter, Kathleen Wood, all of Vinton; grandchildren Douglas Wood of Perry, IA, Richard L. Wood and his wife Katrina of Vinton, Melinda Schoettmer and her husband Kipp of Vinton, Staci Larson and her husband Joe of Atkins, Katrina Bee, Amanda Noe and Andrew Noe, all of Vinton.  Erna delighted in visits from her great-grandchildren, Ben, Erin and Michael Wood, Jordan and Ryan Schoettmer, and Kevin and Dakoda Bee, all of Vinton.  Erna was preceded in death by her husband Gerald; her son Gerald Lee; her parents; her brothers Edward, William, Helmuth, Eric, and twin brothers Leo and Henry; her sisters, Hulda Sauter, Elfriede Bramow and Ella Schultz.  Visitation will be held Monday, April 16, 2007, from 9:30 until 10 AM at Russell Funeral Home in Vinton.  Graveside services will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton at 10:30 AM, with the Reverend Jan Ziskovsky officiating.  A memorial fund for Stewart Memorial United Methodist Church has been established.
