Obituary for Eunice Ella Wood

Eunice Ella Wood passed away September 30, 2007, following a short illness and stay at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton. Born November 8, 1915, in rural Cedar Township near Mt. Auburn, Eunice and her two brothers, Gerald and Byron, were the children of Samuel and Vena (Shadle) Irwin.     She attended school through 8th grade in Iowa’s rural Bruce Township. Her final school years were spent at the La Porte City High School, later graduating from Garrison.    Eunice married Leland B. Wood in 1934. Together they had three children, Richard (Dick), Marlene and Dennis. Residing in Vinton, Eunice and Leland raised their family and partnered management of the East End Grocery store. Leland also worked as an auto mechanic and owned and managed a filling station in town. Following Leland’s death in 1959, Eunice opened and managed the Mode O Day store in Vinton. In 1983, she closed the Mode O Day store and moved to California to be near her daughter and family. While in California, Eunice worked sales with May Co. and assisted in the day-to-day business activities of the real estate company. Following retirement in California, Eunice returned to Vinton to be the primary caregiver for Leland’s two widowed cousins. Returning to Vinton, Eunice lived in the family home on West 6th Street; she later moved to assisted living at the Vinton Lutheran Home.    One of Eunice’s favorite pastimes was playing Bridge and other card games with her family and friends. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Church Circle, Vinton Women’s Club, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Volunteer Red Cross, which included helping with the Blood Mobile and Bingo at the Lutheran Home.     Eunice was preceded in death by her husband, Leland; her parents, Sam and Vena Irwin; her brothers and their wives: Gerald and Betty, Byron and Virginia; and her great- granddaughter, Nicole McMeans.    Eunice is survived by her three children: Richard (Dick) of Hemphill, TX, Marlene and Gene McMeans of Highland, CA, and Dennis and Muriel Wood of Lake Delhi, IA. Seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and one great –great grandson also survive her.     Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM on Wednesday, September 5, 2007, at First Christian Church in Vinton with Pastor Jerry Thordsen officiating. Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 4, 2007, at Russell Funeral Home in Vinton. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton.    A memorial fund has been established.
