Obituary for Frances Opal Kelly

Van Horne—Frances O. Kelly, 94, died peacefully Monday, December 31, 2018 at The Gardens of Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, January 3, 2019 at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home, Vinton, with a Scripture Service at 11 a.m. with Fr. Ken Glaser officiating. Private family burial will be in the Quasqueton Cemetery.
Frances was born November 15, 1924, in Walker, Iowa, the daughter of William Horace and Alta M. Ensminger Zimpfer. She attended rural school, played basketball for two years in 1939 and 1940 and was a catcher and first baseman on the softball team. She graduated from Brandon High School in 1942 and received her teacher certification from Iowa State Teachers' College in Cedar Falls. She also took classes at Coe College. Frances taught school in a one room country school for three years in the Keystone area and when they consolidated she taught 5th and 6th grades in Keystone for two more years.
In August of 1948, Frances and Laverne Kelly went to Los Angeles with her grandpa Ensminger and on August 23, 1948 they were married and a celebration supper was held at her Aunt Lola Caldwell’s home in Los Angeles. Laverne and Frances farmed the Kelly farm southwest of Van Horne. Frances spent many hours helping Laverne on the farm. She also did seasonal work at Killian's in Cedar Rapids. Her hobbies were sewing quilts, crocheting, gardening and playing cards. Her happiest days were spent in Minnesota fishing, detasseling corn, canning produce from her garden and spending 30 winters in McAllen, Texas. Frances enjoyed community dinners in Van Horne and playing cards at HACAP in Vinton. She was very proud of the family farm and received the Heritage Farm award in 2017. Her greatest pride was in her family.
Frances is survived by her daughter, Ilene (Dave) Loutsch of Vinton; her son, Gary L. Kelly of Van Horne; son-in-law, Marv (Donna) Hoyt; daughter-in-law, Brenda Kelly; one sister, Sandra Thomas of Salem, VA; 7 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, 2 great, great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
