Obituary for Gerald E. Shaffer

Gerald E. Shaffer, 88, of Vinton, died Sunday, December 2, 2007, at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a brief illness.    Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Wednesday, December 5, 2007, at Wesley United Methodist Church in Vinton with Pastor Kären Larson officiating. Visitation will be held 4-7 PM Tuesday at Russell Funeral Home in Vinton. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, also in Vinton.    Gerald was born March 30, 1919, in Elgin, Iowa, the son of John “Jack” M. and Inez M. Howard Shaffer. He graduated from Elgin High School in 1936.    On April 14, 1940, Gerald was united in marriage with Geraldine M. Yearous in Traer, Iowa. The couple lived and farmed in Elgin, raising and breeding purebred Hereford cattle. In 1959, they moved to Vinton to be closer to their son, Jim, who was attending the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School. He continued to help farmers such as his daughter and son-in-law, George and Carol Geater, and others in the Independence area. He retired in 1977. In 1988, Gerald and Geraldine moved to Texas. They returned to Vinton in 1995 and have since resided at Lutheran Home Court.    During his life, Gerald enjoyed hunting, golfing, playing cards, oil painting and music. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and served on the church Board and as a Trustee. He was a Registered Hereford Breeder, a member of the Benton County Beef Board and the American Hereford Association. For many years, Gerald and his wife wintered in Mission, Texas.    Gerald is survived by his wife, Geraldine, of Vinton; one son, James “Jim” (Lynn) of Pflugerville, Texas; one daughter, Carol (George) Geater of Vinton; five grandchildren: Bryon (Kelly) Geater, Julie (Jeff) Manatrey, Lori (Ryan) Heins, Andrea (Dave) Evans and Kevin Shaffer; and 10 great-grandchildren.    He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Rebecca, in 1977; and three brothers: Howard, Reynold and Forrest Shaffer, who died Saturday, December 1, 2007, in Elgin.     A memorial fund has been established.
