Obituary for Leona I. Mussman

Leona Mussman, 96, died Thursday, June 19, 2008, at Willow Gardens Care Center in Marion following a brief illness.  She’d been a resident of the Cedar Rapids/Marion area since 2006.
    Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, June 24, 2008, at Vinton Presbyterian Church with The Rev. Ron Sumption officiating.  Visitation will be held from 6-8 PM Monday, June 23, at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home in Vinton and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.  Interment will be in Garrison Cemetery.
    Leona was born January 24, 1912, in rural Garrison, the daughter of William C. and Laura Pearl Runyan Hansen.  She grew up in the Garrison area, graduating from Garrison High School in 1929.  She then attended Cedar Rapids Business College for one year.
    On November 18, 1933, Leona was united in marriage with Elmer Ervin Mussman at her parents’ home in Garrison.  She and Elmer farmed in the Vinton area and owned the El-Leo Farm where they raised registered Brown Swiss dairy cattle.  Leona also operated a tax service while working as a farm wife.
    Leona had also worked at Milroy and Milroy Law Office, Brenton Bank, and State Bank in Vinton.  She was a 70+-year member of the Vinton Presbyterian Church, a 50+-year member of the Rebekah Lodge in Garrison and was a Red Cross Volunteer.  She was a former Board member and Treasurer of the Garrison Cemetery Association.  Her collection of 800 to 900 obituaries chronicling the history of the Garrison Cemetery can be found on display at the Vinton Public Library.
    Leona is survived by one son, Ervin (Barbara) Mussman of Marion; two daughters, Beverly Bishop of Pahrump, NV, and Alice (Jerry) Bell of West Des Moines; one sister, Geraldine Pickering of Van Horne; six grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
    She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elmer, on February 4, 1971; and one brother, Leland "Dutch" Hansen.
    A memorial fund has been established.
