Obituary for Leonard L. Edwards

Leonard Leroy Edwards, 97, of Vinton, died Sunday, February 22, 2009, at the Vinton Lutheran Home due to a lingering illness from complications of age.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, March 8, 2009, at Wesley United Methodist Church in Vinton with Pastor Kären Larson officiating.  Following the service, family will greet friends in Fellowship Hall at the church.  Inurnment will be held at a later date.
Leonard was born March 14, 1911, in Vinton, the son of Walter Arble and Dessie Mullineaux Edwards.  He received his education from Vinton schools, graduating from Lincoln High School in 1927.  Following graduation, Leonard spent several years touring with the semi-pro baseball teams that were so popular around the Midwest when baseball was truly America’s favorite pastime.
On May 2, 1935, Leonard was united in marriage with La Porte City resident Vivian Coburn at Waterloo Methodist Church.
Leonard and his father formed a business partnership in 1935, and worked together at Edwards Plumbing and Heating.  He was known professionally for his precision sheet metal fabrication and installation work.  He was also a talented woodworker.  Leonard retired in 1984 after 50 years of service to the Vinton community.
Leonard was a founding member of the Vinton Country Club and a member his entire adult life.  His proudest accomplishments in the sport of golf were hitting a hole-in-one on the Vinton course, golfing at St. Andrews in Scotland, and, at 91, “hitting his age.”
He was a 50-year member at Wesley United Methodist Church.
Leonard is survived by his wife of 73 years, Vivian Edwards of Vinton; three sons: John (Carol) of Cedar Rapids; Jim (Toni) of Puyallup, WA; and Dave (Kim) of Vinton; eight grandchildren: Jeff (Betsy) Edwards of Newhall, CA; Shelly (Chris) Mussman of Grand Forks, ND; Mike Edwards of Manhattan, NY; Stewart Edwards of Shellsburg; Skye Edwards of Pensacola, FL; and Josh, Ben and Nate Merino; five great-grandchildren: Jake, Jack, Jessica, Jason and Camden; and many nieces and nephews across the United States.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Wendell and Dale; and two sisters: Catherine and Jeanne.
A memorial fund has been established.
A special thank you to the staff of the Vinton Lutheran Home for the wonderful care they gave Leonard in the last six months of his life.
