Obituary for Mary Catherine Schoeberl

Mary Catherine Schoeberl of Vinton, formerly of Brandon, died peacefully at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton on Sunday, August 10, 2008, at the age of 101 due to complications of age. 
    Visitation will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Walker on Tuesday, August 12, from 4 to 8 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 5 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Father David Ambrosy at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with visitation from 9 a.m. until Mass time. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Walker. 
    Mary Catherine Schoeberl was born December 5, 1906 in Alburnett, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Mary Magdalena Schmitz Gutenkauf. Her family moved to Seneca, SD, where Mary attended school. 
    On December 27, 1932, Mary was united in marriage with George Raymond Schoeberl in Seneca, where the family made their home. Their five sons were born in Seneca and in 1941, the family moved to Cedar Rapids where their three daughters were born. Mary worked at Killian’s for many years and also worked as a CNA at the Mental Health Institute in Independence, retiring in 1976. 
    Mary was a Brandon resident for 40 years. She enjoyed gardening and flowers, sewing, crocheting, baking, cooking, playing cards and bird-watching. Mary was extremely dedicated to her children and their families and she loved family gatherings, especially Christmas. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Walker. 
    Mary is survived by her four sons: Robert Schoeberl of Naples, FL; Donovan Schoeberl and friend Paula of Donna, TX; Jerry Schoeberl and wife Grace of Pulaski, TN; Gene Schoeberl and wife Sharon of Marion; three daughters: Leanna Mraz of Winnebago, IL; Karen Robison, Karol Smith and husband Chuck, all of Brandon; sisters-in-law, Lena Gutenkauf, Frances Gutenkauf and Atonia Gutenkauf, all of Faulton, SD; 52 grandchildren, 66 great-grandchildren, 8 great- great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. 
    She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond, in 1972; one son, Cletus; four brothers: Lawrence, Leo, Harold and Ted Gutenkauf; three sisters: Rose Dehne, Clare Gutenkauf, and Margaret Arbach; two sons-in-law, Chuck Mraz and Dwayne Robison; two daughters-in-law, Barb Schoeberl and Pat Schoeberl; two grandsons, Kent Schoeberl and Jerry Schoeberl, Jr.; one granddaughter, Chrystal Robison; and two great-granddaughters, Shannon McGeal and Pamela Schoeberl. 
    Memorial contributions may be directed to the Brandon Area Community Club or to Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Walker in care of Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home, 1212 1st Avenue, Vinton, IA 52349.
