Obituary for Maxine Harriett Kearns

Maxine Harriet Kearns, 88, of Vinton died Friday, May 23, 2008, at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a brief illness.  She had been a resident of Vinton for 62 years.   
    Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Vinton with Father David Ambrosy officiating.  Visitation will be at the Russell Funeral Home, Vinton, on Tuesday, May 27, from 4 to 8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service with Sister Mary Hargrafen officiating.  Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton. 
    Maxine was born August 13, 1919, in rural Garrison, the daughter of Harry Roscoe and Alpha Irene Cross Merchant.  She graduated from Garrison High School in 1936.  She married William “Bill” Ray Kearns on December 2, 1939, in Davenport, Iowa.  Bill, her husband of 52 years, preceded her in death May 21, 1992.   
    Maxine was a homemaker and owned and operated the A Avenue Tavern with her husband Bill for many years.   
    She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church since 1946.  She was a member of St. Mary’s Altar and Rosary Society, the Lutheran Home Auxiliary and the FSB Heritage Club.  She enjoyed spending time with her family, playing cards, dancing, traveling and sharing time with her friends at congregate meals.   
    Maxine is survived by four sons: Jim and his wife Carolyn of Garrison, Dennis and his wife Kathy of Urbandale, Milo and his wife Connie of Shellsburg, and Tim Kearns and Patty McGoldrick of Pinole, CA; one daughter Patricia Russell and her husband James of Panora; two sisters: Marion Foss and Jean Sides of La Porte City; her special friend Cletus Freidman of Vinton; 16 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.   
    She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one infant daughter Mary; two brothers: Clyde and Myron Merchant; one sister Kathryn Jensen; one son-in-law Vincent Boddicker; and two grandchildren: Natalie Kearns and Adam Boddicker.   
    A memorial fund has been established.
