Obituary for Merle W. Koser

COGGON – Merle W. Koser, 83, of Coggon, died Thursday, January 10, 2008, at Willow Gardens Care Center in Marion following complications of a long illness. He’d been a resident there since April 2006.    Visitation will be held 10 to 11 AM Monday, January 14, 2008, at Russell Funeral Home in Vinton, with the funeral service immediately following at 11 AM with Pastor Dennis Sackett officiating. Military rites will be by George G. Luckey American Legion Post 57 of Vinton. Interment will be in Westview Cemetery, La Porte City.    Merle was born February 12, 1924, in Belle Plaine, Iowa, the son of Preston O. and Josephine Hauser Koser. He graduated from Belle Plaine High School in 1942. He served in the United States Army from 1945 until 1946.    On February 1, 1950, Merle was united in marriage with Zelda Mae Ohrt in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.    Merle worked as a farmer in the Vinton, Solon and Coggon areas. He also worked at the lumber yard and sale barn in Coggon and helped local farmers.    Merle is survived by his wife of 57 years, Zelda Koser of Center Point; two brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law: Myron Sheffler of La Porte City, James and Ruth Walker of Vinton, and Velma Ohrt of Center Point; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.    He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Ruth Hepker.    A memorial fund has been established.
