Obituary for Merlene A. Naylor

Merlene A. Naylor, 73, died early Wednesday morning, August 13, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids following a sudden illness.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 18, 2008, at the Urbana Methodist Church, Urbana, IA, followed by burial at the Urbana Cemetery.  Visitation will be at the church from 3 to 6 pm on Sunday, August 17, and one hour prior to services Monday.
Merlene Ann Naylor was born July 18, 1935, near Winthrop, IA, to Roy and Virginia Cook Harrelson.  Merlene and her twin, Merlyn, were born on their mother’s birthday.  She attended school in Shellsburg and played on the school basketball team.
On February 8, 1953, she married Lyle Naylor at Toddville, IA.   Lyle and Merlene celebrated their 55th anniversary this year.  She worked at Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids for 25 years.
Merlene enjoyed crocheting until “Arthur,” one of the “Ritis” boys, made it too difficult.  She liked camping, playing cards, making ceramic dolls and doing genealogy.  For many years she baked wedding cakes for people.  Merlene’s greatest love was family gatherings and cooking for her family.  She also liked to call friends and just talk to them about their cancer, making her and them feel better.  She was a member of the Urbana Methodist Church, the Urbana Cemetery Association and the Red Hat Society.
Merlene is survived by her husband of 55 years, Lyle; two daughters, Deborah Bergen, Vinton, and Rhonda (Randy) Sacora, South Carolina; three sons, Allen (Tami) Naylor, Hiawatha, Michael (Kathy) Naylor, Vinton, Stephen (Tami) Naylor, South Carolina; twelve grandchildren; two brothers, Thomas (Susan) Harrelson, Merlyn (Sondra) Harrelson; two sisters, Anna Marie (Robert) Kibbie, Beverly (Dale) Lane, several nieces and nephews and special friend, Becki Richart.

A memorial fund has been established.
