Obituary for Mildred W. Gray

Mildred W. Gray, 99, of Vinton, died Friday, January 2, 2009, at Virginia Gay Nursing and Rehab in Vinton due to complications of age.   
    Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Monday, January 5, 2009, at Wesley United Methodist Church in Vinton with Pastor Kären Larson officiating.  Visitation will be held Sunday, Jan. 4, from 2 to 4 PM at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home in Vinton.  Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton.   
    Mildred Wava Gray was born May 24, 1909, in Vinton, the only child of Roy and Mabel Allerding Hayes.  Mildred attended school in Garrison, graduating in 1927.  She received her teaching degree from what is now the University of Northern Iowa and taught at Homer #6 country school.    
    On September 19, 1929, she married Carl Register in Davenport, and they were later divorced.  On February 14, 1943, she married Floyd Gray.  He preceded her in death in 1957.  
    After teaching for one year, Mildred worked as a clerk at the Farmers Store in Garrison, managed and clerked at the Diamond Bros. Grocery in Vinton, and clerked at LaGrange’s Pharmacy in Vinton.  She also worked as a secretary for Runyan Insurance, Iowa Pro Ag and Vinton Insurance, retiring in 1979.  She was a longtime member of Wesley United Methodist Church and the Legion Auxiliary.    
    Mildred is survived by her daughter, Patricia (Bert) Hansen of Vinton; three grandchildren: Susan (Bill) Foss of Vinton; Sally (Dan) Schulte of Watkins; and Scott (Julie) Hansen of Vinton; seven great-grandchildren: Andy (Jennifer) Noeller of Iowa City; Erin (Patrick) Ferguson of Olathe, KS; Cory Foss of Vinton; Ryan Foss of Omaha, NE; Todd Foss of North Liberty; and Alex and Elliot Hansen, both of Vinton; and three great-great-grandchildren: Whitney and Caden Noeller of Iowa City and Avery Ann Ferguson of Olathe, KS.    
    Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands and her step-father, Harry Zimmer.
