Obituary for Rachel E. Fennern

Rachel Elaine Fennern, 82, of Vinton, died Saturday, January 20, 2007, at the Virginia Gay Annex in Vinton following a brief illness.  Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Thursday, January 25, at the Vinton Presbyterian Church.  Visitation will be Wednesday, January 24, from 3:30 to 7:00 PM at Russell Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.  Interment will be in Big Grove Cemetery, Garrison. Rachel was born July 13, 1924, at the family home near Williamsburg to Edgar and Rebecca Roberts Cashman.  The family moved to a farm near Vinton when she was ten.  She attended country school and then graduated from Vinton High School in 1941.  Following high school, she worked at the State Bank of Vinton for several years.  She married Erwin Fennern on August 3, 1952, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, and they farmed near Vinton for many years.  Erwin preceded her in death on June 14, 1998. Rachel was a member of the Vinton Presbyterian Church, Big Grove Homemakers Club, Vinton Garden Club, Modern Entertainers and various church groups.  She enjoyed visits from her family, her flowers and many clubs, and attending area dances and other activities with friends.  Survivors include one son: Larry (Janis) Fennern of San Jose, CA; two daughters: Nancy (Dean) McGowan of Vinton and Anita (Mike) Fager of Marion; 8 grandchildren: Owen (Debi), Andrea and Tyson Fennern of San Jose, CA; Mike and Ryan McGowan of Vinton; Jennifer Fager of Cedar Falls; Melissa Fager of Marion; and Heather (Kent Moody) Fennern of Dysart; 4 great-grandchildren: Taylor McGowan and Grant, Logan and Beau Moody; one brother, Donald (Margaret) Cashman of Cedar Rapids; one sister-in-law, Irene Cashman of Vinton; and special friend Floyd Durow of Center Point. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Daniel; and one brother, Russell Cashman. Rachel was dearly loved by her family and friends and will be greatly missed.  A memorial fund has been established.
