Obituary for Shirley Jean Meier

Shirley Jean Meier, 68, died peacefully Wednesday, January 28, 2009, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha following a lengthy illness.  
    Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, January 31, 2009, at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home in Vinton with Pastor Mark C. Urlaub officiating. A memorial visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, January 30, and one hour prior to the memorial service Saturday at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home.  Inurnment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton, at a later date.  
    Shirley was born February 10, 1940, in Ruthven, Iowa, the daughter of John Raymond and Violet Walker Gommels.  She attended school in Ruthven and Spencer and graduated from high school in Toledo.
    On August 6, 1988, Shirley was united in marriage with John Meier at the Free Methodist Church in Vinton.  She worked as a housekeeper for 20 years, retiring in 2002.
    Shirley was a member of the Methodist Church in Ruthven and sang in the church choir during her childhood.
    Shirley is survived by her husband, John, of Vinton; three sons: Scott Sweet of Michigan; Brian (Lisa) Sweet of Louisiana; and Tracy (Tina) Sweet of Arkansas; one daughter: Brenda (Larry) Kersevich of Vinton; two step-sons: Mike (Devon) Meier of Minnesota; and Jon (Jennifer) Meier of Wisconsin; one sister: Helen Leonard of Vinton; 12 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and her beloved dog, Angel.
    She was preceded in death by her parents; one son: Jerry Michael Stanley; and one nephew: Jeff Leonard.
    A memorial fund has been established.
