Obituary for Velma C. Sturtz

Velma Sturtz, 97, of rural Vinton, died Monday, July 7, 2008, at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton, surrounded by her loving family.
    Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Thursday, July 10, 2008, at Urbana Christian Church in Urbana with Rev. Tom Felts officiating.  Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 PM Wednesday, July 9, at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home in Vinton and one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.  Interment will be in Urbana Cemetery.
    Velma was born May 31, 1911, near Garrison, Iowa, the daughter of John and Edith Culp Christy.  She attended Garrison schools.
    On January 7, 1930, Velma was united in marriage with Harry Sturtz in Marengo.  The couple farmed near Garrison until 1943 when they purchased a farm near Urbana.  It was this farm where they raised their four sons.  Velma was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening, flowers, quilting and cooking.
    Velma was a former member of the Garrison Church of the Brethren, Prairie Creek Christian Church and the Industrial Circle.  She had currently been a member of the Urbana Christian Church and C.W.F.  She was also a member of the Cheney Club, the Helping Hand Club and the Urbana Cemetery Association, where she held the office of President for 19 years.   
    Velma is survived by three sons: George and Roy Sturtz, both of rural Vinton, and Roger (Jean) Sturtz of Urbana; one brother, Melvin (Mary Jo) Christy of Salem, OR; five grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Lloyd Sturtz; one daughter-in-law, Rhonda Sturtz; one sister, Mildred Christy; and three brothers, Glenn, Merlin and Lloyd Christy.
    A memorial fund has been established.
