Verle Harold Sanders was born April 27, 1915, in rural Shellsburg, the son of Claud and Fanny Nabholz Sanders. He graduated from Shellsburg School in 1934.  Verle married Culah Evens on August 8, 1940. They were married for 32 years before Culah died in 1973. Verle later married Janet Bomar on August 18, 1985.
Verle had a passion for farming, working locally as a farmer all of his life. His life reflected his years of farming in his character of strong work ethic, perseverance, and integrity.  When his body no longer enabled him to physically work the land, his farming tradition lived on in the farming business he established with his sons, Sanders & Sons Farm and Seed.
Verle enjoyed spending time with family, snow skiing, Mens’ Coffee Group, golfing and working on the farm. He was an avid supporter of 4-H and FFA and served as a 4-H leader for many years.  He was also a member of several other farm commodity organizations.
Verle was also an active member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Vinton. His family cherishes the memories of his faithful love for all, which was rooted in Jesus’ faithful love for him. Verle will be greatly missed, but his family finds peace in knowing he is now living an eternal life free of pain.
Verle is survived by his wife, Janet; his sons, Doyle (Margaret) Sanders of Johnston and Dwight (Bonnie) Sanders of Vinton; his step-son, James (Stephanie) Bomar of Vinton; his step-daughter, Elizabeth (Scott) Tichy of Cedar Rapids;  his sister, Pauline Schirm of Newhall; his brother, Lloyd (Ruth) Sanders of Brasilia; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Verle was preceded in death by his wife, Culah; his brother, Stanley; and his sister, Leone Lint.
