Obituary for Viola Mary Hendricks

Viola M. Hendricks, 96, of Garrison, Iowa, died Saturday, September 23, 2017, at Ravenwood Specialty Care in Waterloo. Per Viola's wishes, her body has been cremated and inurnment will be held in National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix.

Viola was born August 7, 1921, in Yoder, Wyoming, the daughter of Henry and Margaret Kister Ernest. She graduated from high school in 1939 in Billings, Montana.

In 1946, Viola was united in marriage with John Francis Hendricks at the Methodist church in San Bernardino, CA. He preceded her in death on October 15, 1999.

Viola worked as a clerk at an air base for 5 years before working as a kitchen manager in a public school for 20 years, retiring in 1993.

She was a member of the Methodist church and sang in church choir for over 30 years. She was a member of the Young Democrats and was an officer in charge of voting polls. She belonged to VFW #788 in Cedar Rapids. She was a Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Woodcraft Rangerettes leader and marched with youth groups in parades.

Viola enjoyed vacations with her family in the mountains, trout fishing, writing letters to friends and relatives, Big Band and other 40's music and dancing.

Viola is survived by one son, David J. (Nancy) Hendricks of Jefferson City, MO; one daughter, Corrine V. Gross of Ainsworth, NE; four grandchildren: Venessa (John) Fernandez of Ainsworth, NE; Ken (Tina) Shillam of Arizona; Jarrod (Shawna) Hendricks of Jefferson City, MO; and Travis (Daniel) Hendricks of Brooklyn, NY; and eight great-grandchildren: Jeremiah, Arian, Grant, Grayson, Gwyn, Kyle, Scott & Chris Fernandez.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, John.
